Massive Earthquake Hits Rydułtowy Mining Site: Emergency Response Initiated
Struck by an sudden jolt, the Rydułtowy mine near Rybnik experienced a massive earthquake-like seismic event yesterday at dawn, disrupting the work of 68 miners in the area. The seismic tremor, measured at a magnitude of 3.1 on the Richter scale, occurred at 8:16 AM local time on April 29, sending shockwaves through the community.
Aleksandra Wysocka-Siembiga, spokesperson for the Polish Mining Group (PGG), reported that 15 miners were successfully extracted immediately after the quake, 10 of whom were transported to hospitals with stable conditions. The remaining miners were being assessed for potential injuries. Ten helicopters from the Air Ambulance Service were dispatched to the scene to assist with the emergency response, and 10 rescue teams were mobilized in response to the disaster.
"The quake was powerful and carried a high-energy punch, occurring in Seam 713 at a depth of 1,200 meters," said Wysocka-Siembiga. "We are working around the clock to evacuate the crew and carry out the rescue operation, hoping for a favorable outcome."
As rescue teams vigorously continue their endeavors, the priority remains on evaluating the risks of future collapses and fires, as the energy generated by the tremor was comparable to a medium-sized earthquake, severely damaging the mine's underground infrastructure.
"We are constantly observing the situation to ensure that rescue teams are working in the safest conditions possible," stated Zbigniew Rawicki, Director of the Department of Underground and Open-Pit Mining at the Higher Mining Office, on Polsat News.
By midday, PGG had confirmed that communication with two miners had been lost. Initial reports from RMF24 suggested that communication with 12 miners initially ceased before being restored. The seismically impacted section of the mine was shut down for safety purposes.
Local authorities, including the police, are onsite to manage a crowd of concerned family members and ensure emergency services have clear paths to the mine. "We received the accident report from the Rydułtowy mine, and a significant number of people have gathered now that they've learned about the tremor," said Małgorzata Koniarska, a senior officer from the Wodzisław Śląski police department. "Our job is to ensure that emergency services can access the mine unimpeded."
Despite the severe damage and intense rescue efforts, no fatalities have been reported as of yet. The community remains on edge, anxiously awaiting updates from the mine.
