Massive demonstrations oppose Trump's planned official visit
On Thursday, US President Donald Trump will meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, but outside the political sphere, thousands of people took to the streets of London to voice their disapproval of Trump's visit to the UK.
The protests were organised by a coalition called "Stop Trump," a broad alliance of campaign groups opposing Trump's climate, migration, and global human rights policies. Over 1,600 security personnel were deployed to manage the demonstrations, which saw at least 110,000 participants, according to Jo Williamson, a retiree from east London.
Williamson, holding a sign with the words "Tyrant, Racist, Untruthful, Misogynist, Putinist" attributed to each letter of Trump's name, expressed her concern about the world being taken over by evil people. Zoe Gardner of the "Stop Trump" coalition stated that they wanted to give the British people the opportunity to express their hatred of Donald Trump, his policies, and his racism.
During his visit, Donald Trump and his wife Melania were welcomed at Windsor Castle by Prince William and his wife Catherine. The state visit includes a joint carriage ride around Windsor Castle and a planned state banquet for the evening. However, the US President has no public events planned in London during his stay.
In a controversial move, activists projected images of Donald Trump with Epstein on Windsor Castle before his meeting with King Charles III. The King and Queen Camilla received the Trumps, but London's mayor was not invited to the events surrounding Trump's state visit.
This state visit comes at a time when relations between the UK and the US are under strain due to differences in policy on various issues, including climate change and immigration. The visit provides a platform for both sides to discuss these matters and potentially find common ground.
