Massive demonstration in Tel Aviv against the ongoing conflict in Gaza

The ongoing conflict in Gaza continues to escalate, with reports of over 1,200 deaths and more than 250 abductions as hostages to the Gaza Strip during the attack that began on October 7, 2023 [1][2]. The health authority controlled by Hamas reports more than 61,000 deaths since the start of the conflict [3].

The military believes that the hostages are being held in areas that the army does not currently control, which means they could also be in the city of Gaza. According to Israeli estimates, there are currently still 50 hostages in the hands of Hamas, of whom about 20 are believed to be still alive [1].

The families of the hostages fear for their loved ones' lives, especially in light of the Israeli Security Cabinet's decision to capture the city of Gaza, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu [4]. The military operation, if carried out, aims to take control of the entire coastal region of Gaza.

The demonstration against the expansion of the Gaza conflict was called by the Forum of Relatives of those abducted by the Islamist Hamas to the Gaza Strip. Tens of thousands of people protested in Tel Aviv, expressing their concerns for the lives of the hostages and the civilian population [4].

The UN Security Council has held meetings urging the immediate and unconditional release of the hostages as part of a broader call for a political solution to the conflict [1][2]. The humanitarian situation remains dire, with continued Israeli military actions and restrictions on humanitarian aid into Gaza increasing concerns about the welfare of the hostages and the civilian population [2][4].

The hostages are reported to be held in horrific conditions, with disturbing images having circulated recently, leading to international condemnation [1]. Jossi Scharabi, one of the hostages, was killed by an Israeli rocket at the place of his captivity [1].

The conflict in Gaza is deeply intertwined with ongoing regional tensions and Israel’s broader security concerns, emphasizing the complexity of resolving the crisis [1][3]. As the situation continues to unfold, the international community is urging for a peaceful resolution to ensure the safety of all those affected.
