Massive Backlog Threatens to Eliminate $40 Billion Worth of Orders

The global defense industry is experiencing a significant upswing, fueled by the ongoing Ukrainian conflict and geopolitical changes under the new presidential administration. This surge in demand is benefiting German defense giant, Rheinmetall. The company is poised for record sales and is eyeing a foray into space.

CEO Armin Papperger anticipates a substantial growth trajectory for the Düsseldorf-based DAX company. If everything goes according to plan, Rheinmetall could surpass €40 billion in revenue by 2030 - a significant leap from the 2024 figure of around €10 billion. Papperger is optimistic about the influx of orders and is planning an expansion of production capacity. Rheinmetall is even repurposing factories from its civilian division to ramp up production for the military sector.

Spacecraft manufacturing is set to begin at Neuss, with production expected to commence from 2026. In preparation, Rheinmetall has formed a joint venture with the Finnish company ICEYE. The company also plans to acquire plants, such as those from automakers like Volkswagen, if the conditions are advantageous. These strategies could pave the way for further growth, along with potential acquisitions and collaborations. The joint venture with ICEYE is projected to generate annual revenues of €1 billion.

Rheinmetall's defense division has been a major contributor to the company's growth. The first-quarter figures showed a doubling of pre-tax profit to €108 million, with revenue increasing by 46% to €2.3 billion. military business saw a remarkable surge of around 73%. Orders, particularly from the German military, rose by over 180% to €11 billion.

The company has confirmed its aspirations for a growth of 25-30%, with the military business expanding by 35-40%. The operating margin is expected to rise to around 15.5% (up from 15.2% in the previous year). However, current defense spending plans have not been factored into the forecast, and updates will be made once the details become clearer.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has marked a turning point for the defense industry. Increased defense spending is critical to enhance military capabilities, with additional momentum provided by US President Donald Trump's policy promoting higher defense spending among NATO countries.

CEO Papperger expects a rapid increase in defense spending following a conversation with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte. Rutte suggested NATO countries should aim for a defense spending of 3.5% of their respective GDP, up from the current target of 2%, with Trump advocating even higher figures. This potential increase in defense spending could generate an order potential of €300 billion from Germany and the EU alone by 2030.
