Massive A1 motorway shutdown after gas leak and vehicle fire near Sottrum
A serious traffic accident on the A1 motorway near Sottrum caused major disruptions late on Sunday. The crash, just past the Grundbergsee rest area towards Bremen, led to a gas leak and a vehicle fire. Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after midnight, triggering a large-scale response.
The incident began when a converted camper van was damaged, bending a gas valve and making it impossible to stop the gas flow. One of the vehicles also caught fire, prompting an initial 'life in danger' alert. Firefighters quickly reassessed the situation and confirmed a gas leak from the van.
The fire department deployed three vehicles and 13 personnel, supported by four ambulances, a patient transport vehicle, and four highway police patrol cars from Sittensen. In total, 42 emergency vehicles were involved, including 18 from the fire service, 12 from rescue teams, and 8 from the Autobahnpolizei. A wide perimeter was cordoned off around the hazard zone, forcing a full closure of the A1 in both directions. It took firefighters roughly two hours to secure the gas leak, with the entire operation lasting about three hours. Injured individuals were taken to nearby hospitals, while a dog found in one of the vehicles was transported to a veterinary clinic.
The accident caused significant delays as emergency crews worked through the night to contain the gas leak and clear the scene. The A1 remained closed until the situation was fully resolved. Authorities have not yet released further details on the cause of the crash or the condition of those involved.
