Massive 100-Vehicle Pileup Shuts Down Interstate 196 Near Grand Rapids

A massive chain-reaction crash involving over 100 vehicles, including dozens of jackknifed lorries, shut down Interstate 196 near Grand Rapids on Monday morning. The pileup, caused by heavy snow and high winds, led to hazardous conditions and multiple injuries. Authorities have warned drivers to avoid the area as recovery efforts continue.

The crashes began around 10:20 a.m. on January 19, 2026, as icy roads and gusts exceeding 30 mph created whiteout conditions. Reduced visibility and blowing snow triggered numerous collisions and slide-offs along I-196 between Hudsonville and Zeeland. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), responsible for the highway’s upkeep, reported that the road remains closed in both directions, with reopening expected to take several hours.

Crews are working to clear the wreckage, with around 50% of the debris removed so far. Road maintenance teams adjusted their approach by increasing the use of sand in their gritting mixture, as subzero temperatures made salt less effective. Meanwhile, the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids issued a travel warning for areas near and west of US-131, urging motorists to stay off the roads due to extreme danger.

Approximately nine to 12 people sustained injuries and were taken to hospitals, though no fatalities have been reported. Stranded drivers were transported to Hudsonville High School, where they could arrange rides or reunite with family. Most schools across West Michigan had already closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day or declared a snow day, reducing the number of commuters on the roads.

The closure of I-196 is expected to last for hours while crews continue to clear the wreckage and treat the roads. Injured individuals have received medical attention, and stranded motorists have been assisted. Authorities continue to monitor conditions and advise against unnecessary travel in the affected region.
