Here's a fresh take on the story:

18-year-old Marvel, a talented volleyball player at Milford High School, faced a shocking detention by ICE agents on his way to practice recently.

Marvel Gomes da Silva, a Brazilian national, is a junior at the high school and was driving his father's car when it was stopped by ICE agents, according to Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons. Despite not being the intended target of the operation, Marcelo found himself in a bind.

In a heartwrenching video shared by his attorney, Marcelo's family pleaded for his release, expressing their missing him deeply. His father, Joao Paulo Gomes Pereira, appealed to ICE, "I love you, my son. We need Marvel back home. It's no family without him."

Marvel's siblings shared their longing for him too, with his brother eager to give him a big hug and his sister pining for the simple pleasures they used to share, like his homemade ramen and chicken nuggets.

Marvel entered the U.S. in 2012 on a student visa that has since expired. He has no criminal history and is seeking asylum. However, Marcelo's current status led him to be held by ICE.

Though initially held in custody, a federal judge issued an emergency order that kept Marcelo within the judicial district of Massachusetts for 72 hours. Following this period, a federal judge ordered that the government must provide at least 48 hours' notice before moving him.

Community support for Marvel's release has been overwhelming. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey demanded answers from ICE regarding Marcelo's arrest and detainment. The community has rallied behind the high school star, with protests springing up in front of Milford Town Hall and Milford Public High School.

Thankfully, as of June 6, 2025, Marcelo has been released and is back home among his loved ones[1][2].
