In the heart of Germany, the vibrant city of Hamburg hosts one of the largest and most significant LGBTQ+ pride events in the country – the Christopher Street Day (CSD) demonstration. This annual celebration, which attracts tens of thousands of participants, pays homage to the Stonewall Inn uprising that took place on June 28, 1969, in New York City's Christopher Street.
The Stonewall uprising, as it came to be known, is considered the birth of the modern gay and lesbian movement. A series of spontaneous demonstrations by members of the LGBTQ+ community against a police raid at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar, marked a turning point in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights worldwide.
In honour of this historical event, the first CSD events started in 1979 in several German cities, including Hamburg. This year, over 50 walking groups and approximately 75 trucks and other vehicles have registered for the Hamburg CSD demonstration. The event is expected to draw up to 250,000 participants, making it one of the largest events of its kind in Germany.
