Masaharu Fukuyama Participated in questionable Fuji TV Social Gatherings
Masaharu Fukuyama, a prominent Japanese actor and singer, has admitted to attending inappropriate parties organized by former Fuji TV Executive Vice President Toru Ota. These parties, which reportedly involved female employees and announcers, were linked to a sexual harassment scandal at Fuji Television Network Inc.
The controversy emerged following a third-party investigation into Fuji TV’s workplace culture after a sexual bribery scandal involving Nakai Masahiro. The investigation, released in March 2025, revealed more than 100 cases of sexual harassment within Fuji TV, including physical contact and hotel invitations. The report noted that female announcers raising concerns faced potential negative career repercussions.
Fukuyama acknowledged his attendance at these events, stating he thought of them as friendly or work-related parties and regretted his role in contributing to an uncomfortable atmosphere. His talent agency confirmed his involvement but denied he engaged in any harassment himself. Fukuyama publicly apologized for any offense caused, expressing that he was embarrassed and shocked by the findings, especially after learning some attendees felt unpleasant during these gatherings.
The parties in question took place in an unspecified location since 2005, occurring once or twice a year. They involved both Fuji TV female announcers and well-known male performers like Fukuyama. A report about these parties was published in a weekly magazine on August 18, 2022.
Fukuyama, who is 56 years old, told the magazine that he deeply regretted his actions at the parties. According to the magazine, Fukuyama felt like a party host and aimed to liven up the mood. The parties were deemed inappropriate by the third-party panel that investigated issues with Fuji Television Network Inc. One participant felt uncomfortable during the parties, as per the panel report.
Following the scandal, Fuji TV’s president has apologized and promised reforms to address sexual harassment and improve corporate governance. The parties in question, as detailed in the third-party panel's report published in March, often included sexual content that made some participants uncomfortable.
This scandal has shaken the Japanese entertainment industry, with Fukuyama being one of the most high-profile figures involved. As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen what further changes will be implemented to ensure a safer and more respectful work environment at Fuji Television Network Inc.
