Masaharu Fukuyama Participated in Controversial Fuji TV Social Gatherings
Prominent Japanese Singer and Actor Masaharu Fukuyama Admits to Attending Inappropriate Parties
Masaharu Fukuyama, a renowned Japanese singer and actor, has acknowledged attending parties organized by Fuji Television Network Inc. that were deemed inappropriate by a third-party investigation. These events, which have been a part of a problematic culture at Fuji TV since 2005, were hosted by former Executive Vice President Toru Ota and occurred once or twice a year.
Participants included female employees and announcers from Fuji TV, and conversations often revolved around sexual content, making some attendees uncomfortable. Fukuyama stated that he attended these gatherings thinking of them as work-related events and regretted his participation, expressing remorse for his actions and acknowledging that he tried to play the role of host to liven up the mood but went about it wrongly.
The third-party panel’s March 2025 report highlighted a broader pattern of sexual harassment and inappropriate behavior at Fuji TV, involving more than 100 cases involving female announcers. These ranged from physical contact to inappropriate invitations, with complaints often dismissed or leading to worries about negative career consequences for the complainants. The parties Fukuyama attended were part of this problematic culture, but his agency clarified that he was not involved in direct harassment incidents uncovered by the investigation.
Fukuyama has publicly expressed regret and said he has considered how to apologize for his actions. However, no further actions or consequences for Fukuyama have been reported at this time.
