Marvel's Fantastic Four: First Steps' Post-Credits Sequence Reveals Insights about the following Two Years in Marvel Cinema
In a recent roundtable interview, Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, shared exciting insights about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). One of the most intriguing revelations was the announcement of a major reset after Phase Six, with plans for a groundbreaking event known as Secret Wars in December 2027.
The storyline for the upcoming phase begins to unfold with the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, marking the start of Phase 6 and the introduction of the Fantastic Four into the MCU. The film, which will hit theatres in December 2022, sets the stage for the looming conflict that lies ahead in Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release in December 2026.
The post-credits scene of Fantastic Four: First Steps provides a chilling glimpse into the future, revealing Doctor Doom as the next major villain. The scene, which takes place four years after the film's main events, finds Sue Storm reading to her son Franklin Richards, who is now a slightly older version of the boy we've previously seen with cosmic powers. The setting is the Baxter Building, home of the Fantastic Four.
As Sue Storm leaves to get another book, she senses something amiss upon returning. Activating her powers, she discovers Doctor Doom standing in their living room, playing with Franklin. Doom is shown with his iconic green cloak and holding his mask in his hand, but his face remains hidden. This scene not only introduces Doctor Doom as the new big bad but also emphasizes the growing danger around Franklin and the family.
The arrival of the Fantastic Four in Thunderbolts, as hinted in the post-credits scene, suggests they have come to alert the heroes of the main-line MCU about Doom's impending arrival. The strategic placement of this scene both surprises the audience and sets up Doctor Doom as the threat leading into future MCU events like Avengers: Doomsday.
The introduction of Doom in First Steps also opens up possibilities for exploring the history between Downey's Doom character in Avengers: Doomsday and Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards.
Phase 6 will continue across various Marvel TV properties and will be followed by Spider-Man: Brand New Day in July 2023. Marvel Studios has decided to forego a Nerd Prom appearance this year, focusing instead on the exciting developments ahead in the MCU.
Stay tuned for more updates as the MCU continues to evolve and expand.
