Martial is expected to join AEK Athens following his departure from Manchester United
Anthony Martial Makes High-Profile Move to AEK Athens
After a successful six-year stint at Manchester United, French international Anthony Martial is set to join Greek powerhouse AEK Athens on a permanent transfer. The deal, reportedly worth £2.5million per season, makes Martial the club's top earner.
Martial, who joined Manchester United in 2015 for a transfer fee of £36m, will be reuniting with ex-Watford stars Roberto Pereyra and Nordin Amrabat at AEK Athens. The 27-year-old forward will also join former Brentford goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha at the club.
During his time at Manchester United, Martial scored 81 goals in 289 appearances across all competitions, with his best season being 2019–20 where he scored 23 goals in 48 games and received the club's Players' Player of the Year award. He also had a loan spell at Sevilla in 2021–22.
In September 2024, Martial joined AEK Athens as a free agent. In the 2024–25 season with AEK Athens, he scored 7 goals in 19 appearances, showing a good scoring rate initially. However, reports from August 2025 suggest Martial has fallen out of favor at AEK Athens and was not registered for a Europa Conference League qualifier, indicating possible challenges in his current stint at the club.
Martial ended his United career with a total of 90 goals in 317 appearances. His debut goal for Manchester United came in a 3-1 victory over Liverpool. Despite his prolific start at the club, Martial struggled to regain his goalscoring touch after his most prolific campaign in 2019-20.
Martial won four trophies during his time at Manchester United, including the 2016-17 Europa League. However, his playing time under Erik ten Hag was limited in his final season at the club, leading to his departure earlier this year following the expiry of his contract.
Martial's contract surpasses the one given to former Tottenham man Erik Lamela, who joined AEK Athens in July. This move marks a significant acquisition for AEK Athens, as they aim to compete at the highest level in Greek football and European competitions.

This data highlights Martial's significant contribution at Manchester United and a promising start at AEK Athens, though his situation at AEK appears to be uncertain recently.
