Marseille's potential re-acquisition of Aubameyang nears completion: organization

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the Gabon national team's all-time leading scorer with 35 goals, has made his return to Olympique de Marseille after a brief stint in Saudi Arabia with Al-Qadsiah.

Aubameyang, a former forward for Arsenal, Barcelona, Chelsea, and Marseille, is expected to bring his wealth of experience to the French club. He has signed a two-year contract with Marseille until 2027.

The 2023/24 season was a prolific one for Aubameyang, as he scored an impressive 30 goals for Marseille in all competitions during his previous stint with the club. However, Marseille failed to qualify for Europe that season, finishing behind champions Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1.

Aubameyang's contract with Al-Qadsiah was terminated, and he has now ended his contract with the Saudi Arabian club. His career trophies include the 2022/23 La Liga title with Barcelona.

Upon his arrival at Marseille, Aubameyang was warmly welcomed by fans at Marignane Airport on July 30, 2025. He underwent a medical examination shortly after his arrival before officially signing with the club. Reports from late July 2025 indicated he was very close to finalizing the deal to rejoin Marseille following his brief stint in Saudi Arabia.

Marseille finished second in Ligue 1 during the 2022/23 season, qualifying for the Champions League. Aubameyang is expected to help the club challenge for honours in the upcoming season.

Aubameyang's unexpected return to Marseille opens up possibilities for the club to excel in European leagues, particularly in the Champions League, as they secured a spot in it following their 2022/23 Ligue 1 second-place finish. His impressive track record with 30 goals in a single season for Marseille during the 2023/24 season suggests a strong influence in French sports, while his previous experience in European football with teams like Arsenal, Chelsea, and Barcelona may offer valuable insights. Despite his departure from Al-Qadsiah in Russia, Aubameyang's latest trophy, the 2022/23 La Liga title with Barcelona, underscores his ongoing success in international football.
