Marrowbone announces debut direction of screenwriter Sergio G. Sánchez
In a remarkable foray into filmmaking, Spanish screenwriter Sergio G. Sánchez makes his directorial debut with the highly anticipated film, Marrowbone. The movie, set to captivate audiences, tells the story of a young man and his younger siblings who are haunted by a sinister presence in their home.
The photography in Marrowbone masterfully captures the summer of childhood that is gradually decaying, creating an idealized memory atmosphere. Xavi Giménez, the director of photography, brings a naturalistic approach to the film, avoiding sensationalist elements to create a more authentic feel.
At the heart of Marrowbone is George MacKay's portrayal of the tortured character Jack. The script for the film was meticulously written, with Sánchez sending a few pages per day to producer Beleñ Atienza, constructing it brick by brick.
Sánchez and fellow Spanish filmmaker J.A. Bayona share a passion for storytelling through film, particularly in the genres of horror and thriller, and a deep interest in exploring human emotions and psychological depth. Bayona shared creative wisdom throughout the different phases of Marrowbone, offering advice and sharing his point of view during the editing process.
The production designer, Patrick Salvador, faced the challenge of adapting the house to resemble Maine, where the story is set. The house, an essential character in the story, is portrayed as a real, 17th-century Asturian stone palace. To convey an unkempt feel, the house's lawn was allowed to grow for five months, giving it a closer resemblance to a jungle than a tidy courtyard.
Telecinco Cinema recognised the great potential in Marrowbone's script and surrendered to its possibilities. The main location, the house, has electric power, but it is unused, which was taken into account in the use of natural light. This natural light was a key element in the film's staging, supporting the actors' performances and responding organically to the needs of the script.
Sandra Hermida, who was the line producer for The Orphanage and The Impossible, rejoins the team as line producer and executive producer for Marrowbone.
Sergio G. Sánchez, the director of Marrowbone, hopes that the audience will find a rich universe full of nuances, with many turns and a lot of emotion in the film. With its captivating storyline, talented cast, and stunning visuals, Marrowbone promises to be a must-watch for fans of horror and thriller genres.
