Marlborough’s beloved beach and bridge shut for years after devastating floods

Two popular spots in Marlborough have closed due to flood damage, affecting both transport and recreation. Ferry Bridge will remain shut until mid-2027, while Whites Bay beach and its campsite are also off-limits. Authorities have apologised for the disruption but stress safety as the top priority.

The Department of Conservation (DOC) closed the Whites Bay campsite in July after severe flooding caused major damage. This campsite is the only way to reach the beach, meaning the entire area is now inaccessible. Stacey Wrenn, DOC’s operations manager, explained that repairs are complicated and will take time. The team is working to restore the site but cannot yet confirm when it will reopen.

The closures mean changes for locals and tourists who rely on these locations. Whites Bay beach and campsite will remain shut until DOC completes its safety checks. Ferry Bridge will not reopen for nearly three years, leaving drivers to find other routes. Water quality updates remain available online for those seeking safe swimming options.
