With a heartbeat racing, her family watched as Marla was rushed to the intensive care unit at the university hospital in Jena.
The following seven weeks left Marla's family feeling isolated for an eternity and her young body battling for survival, enduring chemo, catheters, and surgery. Marla's spirit, however, never broke: "But when my long hair fell out, I cried a lot."
The Road to Recovery
Marla's road to recovery required a stem cell donor - a beacon of hope that the DKMS and organizations like 'Ein Herz für Kinder' tirelessly work towards providing.
When the time came for Marla's transplant on May 11, she found her life-saving hero. "Ein Herz für Kinder" supports typing campaigns that save the lives of sick children, and Marla's peripheral blood stem cell transplant was successful.
Reflecting on her experience, Marla shares: "The alpacas are soft and fluffy. And so tousled on the head." A little like herself, now her hair sprouting as vibrantly as the alpacas' fleece.
