Gas Disconnection Costs: A Rollercoaster Ride in North Rhine-Westphalia

Significant discrepancies in costs associated with discontinuing gas services - Markedfluctuation in disconnection fees for gas services

Shockingly varying costs greet residents who choose to disconnect their gas connection in North Rhine-Westphalia. A survey by the Consumer Center NRW, covering all 115 gas network operators, revealed this stark contrast. A whopping 78 of them remained conspicuously silent about their disconnection fees.

Among the 37 respondents, disconnection came free at two-thirds. But at the remaining one-third, it set consumers back an average of 930 euros. That's the rundown from the Consumer Center. Yet, the mystery around the overlooked 78 remains unsolved.

The call to disconnect comes as more and more homes embrace alternative heating solutions, such as heat pumps or district heating. If they've swapped gas for a greener option, they no longer need their gas connection. Disconnection and decommissioning are two different processes. During disconnection, the network connection within the building is severed, and the gas meter is removed. There's an option for reconnection later on.

Apparently, one network operator demands a hefty 3,000 euros for decommissioning. Compared to disconnection, decommissioning is the pricier option, as network operators estimate charging around 1,750 euros on average. The Consumer Center quotes one network operator even estimating decommissioning costs between 3,000 to 6,000 euros.

Wolfgang Schuldzinski, board member of the Consumer Center, advocates for legal regulations to create a uniform approach to gas connections no longer in use, ensuring consumers have the necessary legal protection.

  2. The energy transformation towards greener heating solutions, such as heat pumps and district heating, has resulted in a higher demand for gas disconnection, but the costs and reactions of service providers remain unpredictable.
  3. Wolfgang Schuldzinski, board member of the Consumer Center, calls for a regulatory framework with uniform approaches to gas connections no longer in use to ensure consumer protection in areas like North Rhine-Westphalia during disconnections and decommissioning.
