Mariners to reinstate Bryce Miller on the injury list; summon Logan Evans to team ranks instead.
And Here's the Scoop:
SEATTLE — It's a switcheroo in the M's pitching rotation as Bryce Miller heads to the sidelines and Logan Evans steps up to the mound.
Miller will be hit with the injury bug and placed on the IL, with Evans being recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to kick off Tuesday's match against the snarky Diamondbacks.
Evans was a bit of a surprise guest in the team's clubhouse before yesterday's game as an extra on the taxi squad. After the M's tough 8-4 loss in extra innings to the D-backs, boss-man Dan Wilson announced that Evans would take the ball for game two of the series.
"The cortisone shot didn't do the trick like we hoped," Wilson grumbled regarding Miller's ongoing issue.
Before the game, Wilson labelled Evans' presence as a precaution even though Miller was a no-show alongside the other starters during the pre-game warm-up.
The team's decision to throw Evans into the fray on Tuesday means that Bryan Woo gets bumped to Wednesday's series finale.
Evans' turn on the mound also coincides with fellow namesake Logan Gilbert lining up for what's predicted to be his final rehab start for Tacoma on Tuesday. It all sets up for Evans to pitch Tuesday and Gilbert to reclaim his spot in the rotation when Boston rolls into town.
Miller's latest trip to the disabled list comes just two starts after returning from a previous stint when elbow pain became quite a handful for the Mariners. The M's decided to inject a cortisone shot into Miller's elbow in the hopes of ironing out the problem, but it didn't exactly pan out. Miller surrendered eight earned runs over nine innings in the two games combined and also noticed a dip in velocity towards the latter stages of his game against the Angels.
Miller's right elbow also harbours a bone spur he's been wrestling with. For the season, Miller sports a 2-5 record with a 5.73 ERA and hasn't completed six innings in any of his ten starts.
"I was feeling good early and couldn't execute late," Miller growled after his last outing. "Anytime you give up five (runs) I wouldn't say I made strides. It's just infuriating. A crappy start."
