Mariners Suffer 1-0 Defeat in AFC Champions League: Annayev Secures Victory for Ahal FK with Last Minute Goal against Mohun Bagan
In a tense and closely contested match at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on September 16, 2025, Ahal FK secured a precious away win against Mohun Bagan in their opening Group C match of the AFC Champions League 2.
The encounter was a challenging one for Mohun Bagan, who struggled in attack throughout the game. Their defence looked rusty and error-prone, inviting pressure from the Turkmenistani club throughout the contest.
Despite Mohun Bagan's best efforts, it was Ahal FK who broke the deadlock. In the 83rd minute, Enwer Annayev, a player for Ahal FK, scored the decisive goal. The goal was a left-footed strike from a precise through ball provided by Basim Gurbanberdiyew.
Gurbanberdiyew and Annayev combined immediately after entering the game as substitutes in the 79th minute, replacing Alibek Abdyrahmanow and Magtymberdi Berenow respectively.
Mohun Bagan had their chances, with Jamie Maclaren having a point-blank range opportunity in the 69th minute. However, Ahal's goalkeeper Kakageldi Berdiyev made a brilliant save to preserve his team's lead.
Mohun Bagan's wing play was ineffective during the match, and they missed the injured Manvir Singh in their attack. Dimitri Petratos and Jason Cummings combined in the 69th minute for Mohun Bagan, but it was not enough to prevent the defeat.
The defeat leaves Mohun Bagan with tough questions ahead of their next Group C outing, an away clash against Iranian giants Sepahan on October 21. Ahal FK, on the other hand, will look to build on their impressive start when they host Al-Zawraa in their next match.
