Marine helicopter rescues shipwrecked from North Sea island Wangerooge - Marine Air Squadron 5 Rescues 2 After North Sea Shipwreck
A rescue operation was swiftly executed by Marine Air Squadron 5 after a shipwreck near the North Sea island of Wangerooge. Two individuals were rescued from the seven-meter-long vessel that had to be abandoned.
The rescue helicopter, an NH90 type, was nearby, conducting an exercise when the incident occurred. It arrived at the scene shortly after and initiated the rescue operation. Using a winch and rescue basket, the crew lifted the individuals one by one from the water. The water police are currently investigating the cause of the incident.
The marine helicopters involved in the operation are based in Nordholz, operated by Marine Air Wing 5. This wing also has bases on the North Sea islands of Helgoland and Borkum, as well as in Rostock-Warnemuende on the Baltic Sea. Civilian rescuers, such as the DGzRS, often collaborate with marine helicopters in search and rescue missions.
The quick response of the Marine Air Squadron 5 resulted in the successful rescue of two individuals from the shipwreck. The water police continue to investigate the cause of the incident.
