\"Women must take power" - Marina Abramović's 'Balkan Erotic Epic' to Premiere in Manchester

Internationally renowned performance artist Marina Abramović is set to captivate audiences once again with her latest project, 'Balkan Erotic Epic'. This ambitious performance will premiere at Manchester's Factory International's Aviva Studios from October 9 to 19, 2025. Abramović, the most influential performance artist since the 1970s, promises an immersive exploration of Balkan rituals and the tension between spirituality and sexuality, featuring over 70 performers in 13 scenes.

Born in Belgrade in 1946 to Tito partisans, Abramović's career spans over five decades. She gained fame in the late 1970s and 1980s, often collaborating with her then partner Ulay. Her groundbreaking performances, such as 'Rhythm 0' and 'Imponderabilia', challenged societal norms and pushed the boundaries of art. Abramović's work has been recognised with numerous awards, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 1997 for 'Balkan Baroque'.

In 2010, her retrospective performance 'The Artist is Present' at the MoMA lasted 721 hours, involving silent, seated eye contact with 1,545 visitors. This powerful piece highlighted Abramović's ability to create profound connections between artist and audience.

With 'Balkan Erotic Epic', Abramović continues to push the envelope of performance art. The upcoming festival in Manchester promises to be a compelling exploration of cultural heritage and human experience. Art enthusiasts and those new to performance art alike can expect a thought-provoking and unforgettable experience.
