Marianne Vos exults in victory, feeling both contentment and weariness, following a competitive sprint to claim the finish line on day six of La Vuelta Femenina.
Marianne Vos Snatches Stage Six of La Vuelta Femenina by a Whisker
Marianne Vos edged Mischa Bredewold in a nail-biting photo finish to clinch stage six of La Vuelta Femenina on Friday. This wasn't Vos' first victory of the week; she also bagged stage two and finished second on stages three and four, making her the leading light in the points competition.
Demi Vollering (FDJ-Suez) maintained her overall lead, finishing with the bunch 45 seconds ahead of Anna van der Breggen (SD Worx-Protime). However, the real excitement lies ahead as Saturday's final stage ends on the Alto de Cotobello, a daunting 10.5km climb at an 8% gradient. This decisive stage will ultimately determine the direction of the red jersey.
The penultimate stage of La Vuelta Femenina was set for an expected sprint finish, sandwiched between two grueling mountain stages. Despite multiple attacks, the peloton remained compact until the 80km mark, when a 19-rider breakaway formed, featuring former red jersey wearer Ellen van Dijk (Lidl-Trek) and Olympic champion Kristen Faulkner (EF Education-Oatly).
The group's lead never extended beyond a minute, with Movistar, Liv AlUla Jayco, and Visma-Lease a Bike leading the chase. The break was eventually reabsorbed, prompting an almost immediate counter-attack by Lea Lin Teutenberg (Lotto), Nicole Steigenga (AG Insurance-Soudal), and Sarah Roy (EF Education-Oatly).
Liane Lippert (Movistar) surged ahead with 14km to go, fracturing the peloton. A GC battle ensued, with Marianne Vos, Vollering, van der Breggen, and Marlen Reusser (Movistar) following closely behind. Despite Lippert's best efforts, the group managed to catch up, setting the stage for an exhilarating sprint finish.
Imogen Wolff (Visma-Lease a Bike) expertly led the peloton into the final stretch, positioning Vos perfectly for the sprint. Bredewold opened her sprint first, but Vos launched a last-minute comeback, edging her compatriot in a thrilling photo finish.
Vos was overjoyed with the win, praising her team's incredible effort and expressing excitement for the final stage. With the Alto de Cotobello looming, the overall winner of La Vuelta Femenina 2025 is still up for grabs, promising an exciting conclusion to this year's race.
