In an unexpected move, US Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Fritz has proposed the acquisition of the Commander Islands from Russia for a staggering $15 billion. The proposal, made in an article for Breaking Defense, aims to enhance US monitoring of China's activities in the Arctic region.

The Commander Islands, a group of volcanic islands located in the Bering Sea and part of Russia's Kamchatka Territory, are currently under Russian control. They are strategically positioned near the Bering Strait, which separates Russia from Alaska, USA, making them a potential asset for US Arctic security.

Lieutenant Colonel Fritz, who serves in Estonia, likened the idea to the 1867 Alaska purchase, which was initially viewed as unwise but became vital for US energy and defense strategies. He suggested a "peaceful and pragmatic" acquisition that could benefit both countries and strengthen US Arctic security.

However, the proposal has not been met with enthusiasm by the Russian government. Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, strongly rejected the idea, calling the sale of national territory one of the gravest crimes at both legal and moral levels in Russia. Zakharova, in a sarcastic response, suggested that instead of offering $15 billion to buy Russian territory, Fritz should use that money to pay off part of the enormous US national debt (reported as $36.6 trillion). She emphasized that selling the Motherland is unacceptable.

The Commander Islands have been a subject of territorial dispute between Russia and the United States for some time. Alexander Gamov, a political analyst at KP, has requested a comment from Zakharova regarding the proposal made by US Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Fritz. Gamov, who works as a political analyst at KP, is following the developments closely.
