**Marco Girnth Bids Farewell to "SOKO Leipzig" After 25 Years**

After nearly a quarter-century, actor Marco Girnth is leaving the long-running German crime drama "SOKO Leipzig" on ZDF. The 55-year-old actor, who has played Detective Chief Inspector Jan Maybach since the series' inception in January 2001, has appeared in over 500 episodes.

Girnth's departure, set to take place this month, marks the end of a significant era for the show. He explained his decision to leave, stating, "Passing the age of 50 does something to you... if I want to change something again, it has to happen now." Girnth will still be seen in some episodes of the 26th season before his departure.

Throughout his time on the series, Girnth has developed close relationships with his co-stars, including Melanie Marschke, who plays his superior in the series. He fondly referred to her as his colleague, friend, mentor, and confidante. The two have worked together for 25 years without any serious falling-outs or misunderstandings.

"SOKO Leipzig" started as the first East German spin-off in the "SOKO" franchise and has evolved significantly over the past two and a half decades. One of the most notable changes came in 2003/2004 when the series moved from a primetime slot to the main evening slot, allowing for more extensive storytelling. The switch to digital production has also made the series more cinematic, tighter, and more dynamic.

The series has become more focused on character development and story arcs, with storylines becoming more character-driven, focusing on personal stories and developments of the SOKO detectives over multiple episodes.

Though Girnth's exit will leave a notable impact on the series, "SOKO Leipzig" will continue to tackle socially relevant themes such as custody disputes, trans identity, and traditional roles, reflecting modern realities for its audience. The "SOKO" franchise overall remains active, with "SOKO Leipzig" and "SOKO Stuttgart" continuing with new seasons.

As Girnth embarks on new challenges and upcoming roles, he leaves behind a lasting legacy on "SOKO Leipzig." The series will continue with new seasons and episode arcs, ensuring that the show's impact on German television continues for years to come.

"Girnth may venture into new 'movies-and-tv' projects now that he has made the decision to leave 'SOKO Leipzig'."

"With the changing landscape of 'entertainment' in German television, 'SOKO Leipzig' will continue to address socially relevant themes and maintain its legacy, thanks in part to the contributions of Marco Girnth."
