Marcelo's Journey in the Azores: Open-Hooded Car and Opponents Vanquished

The four-day official visit of President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to the Azores islands in August 2025 was primarily marked by constructive discussions and strategic partnerships between the national government and the Azores autonomous administration. However, a controversy arose during the President's visit to Vila do Porto.

During the visit, the President met with key figures, including José Manuel Bolieiro, President of the Regional Government of the Azores. The discussions focused on solidarity, territorial cohesion, and innovative economic development in the region. The President also highlighted the Azores' blue economy, geostrategic importance, and growing focus on sustainability and technological innovation.

However, the visit to Vila do Porto was a source of political controversy. Allegations were made that a car loaned to the President was left on the street with the hood open, radio on, and the key inside. The PSP, the party responsible for the car, has denied these allegations.

The opposition in Vila do Porto continues to express dissatisfaction, claiming they were not invited to the President's visit. Francisco César, a socialist, stated that the visit should have been for everyone, but ended up being exclusive.

Local journalist Hugo Franco, who was present during the President's visit, is reporting on the events in the Azores. The celebration of the President's visit in Vila do Porto was dominated by the color orange, associated with the opposition.

The car incident remains a point of contention for the opposition, adding to the political tension surrounding the visit. Despite this controversy, the overall visit was focused on affirming the Azores' autonomous status, their strategic maritime and space roles, and an emphasis on innovative and sustainable regional development.
