Marburg's Equal Pay Day Event Exposes Germany's 16% Wage Gap Crisis

This year's Equal Pay Day—the campaign for equal pay—will take place on Friday, February 27. The city of Marburg, together with experts, will provide information on workplace equality at an info booth. Interested visitors can stop by between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. in Marktgasse, at the corner of Wettergasse.

Equal Pay Day highlights the persistent gender pay gap. According to Germany's Federal Statistical Office, women earned 16% less on average than men in 2024—equivalent to €4.10 less per hour (gross). Over the course of a year, this disparity means that while men begin earning from January 1, women effectively work unpaid until February 27. The wage gap has far-reaching consequences, affecting women's ability to save money and their future pensions. On average, women receive lower retirement benefits, putting them at greater risk of poverty in old age.

At the info booth in Marktgasse, visitors can learn about initiatives addressing pay equity, how career choices influence earnings and pensions, and what women can do to secure their financial future. The event will feature City Councilor Kirsten Dinnebier, representatives from Marburg's Office for Gender Equality, Diversity, and Anti-Discrimination, the Senior Citizens' Planning Department, and the Youth Career Assistance Service. Collaborating partners include the Equal Opportunity Officers from the Marburg Employment Agency and the Marburg-Biedenkopf District Job Center, as well as representatives from Arbeit und Bildung e.V. and the Zonta Club Marburg.
