Marathon Details at the 51st BMW Berlin Event: Stringent Restriction on Possession of Firearms and Edged Weapons in the Mitte District

In preparation for the upcoming 51st BMW Berlin Marathon on September 20 and 21, 2025, the Berlin Police have issued a temporary general order to enhance public safety and order. This order prohibits the carrying of all types of knives (including kitchen, pocket, and utility knives) and especially irritant, signal, and blank-firing weapons (SRS weapons) in a limited area of the district of Mitte.

The affected area extends over central sections along the marathon route, including Friedrichstraße to Behrenstraße, Behrenstraße to Ebertstraße, Ebertstraße to Potsdamer Platz, Potsdamer Platz to Potsdamer Straße, Sharounstraße, Herbert-von-Karajan-Straße to Tiergartenstraße, Tiergartenstraße to Hofjägerallee, Hofjägerallee to Großer Stern, and Spreeweg via Lutherbrücke to Paulstraße and back to the railway track. The railway track in the area of Lüneburger Straße (Paulstraße to Friedrichstraße) is also included in the affected area.

Non-compliance with the weapon and knife ban in the affected area may result in immediate seizure and destruction of the items. It is important to note that even those with a small firearm permit may not carry their SRS weapons during the event.

For public assistance during the marathon, police stations 27 (Perleberger Straße 61a, 10559 Berlin), 28 (Alt-Moabit 145, 10557 Berlin), and 56 (Brunnenstraße 175, 10119 Berlin) are located in Berlin. These stations serve the restricted zone in the Mitte district along the marathon route.

The police reserve the right to use immediate force to enforce these measures during the Berlin Marathon. Exceptions are made in the ordinance for police, rescue, and other deployment forces, as well as employees of gastronomic businesses.

The general order for the Berlin Marathon is considered to have been announced the day after its publication in the official gazette. We encourage all participants and spectators to respect these regulations for the safety of everyone involved in the event. Let's make the 51st BMW Berlin Marathon a memorable and safe experience for all!
