Argentine Football Legend Diego Maradona's Trial Repêchage due to Documentary Scandal

The high court in Argentina has decided to reinitiate the trial surrounding the passing of football icon Diego Maradona. The ruling follows allegations of misconduct by a judge, who violated court protocol by featuring in a documentary series about the trial without permission.

Judge Maximiliano Savarino, presiding over the case, deemed the previous trial null and void, citing potential disadvantages faced by both the prosecution and defense due to the judge's actions. He did not provide a specific timeline for the restart of proceedings.

In a twist of events, Judge Julieta Makintach, who featured prominently in the controversial documentary series, resigned on Tuesday after being declared biased. Video evidence emerged showing Makintach actively participating in the production of the series, casting doubt on her impartiality.

The courtroom witnessed a trailer for the miniseries "Divine Justice" during proceedings on Tuesday, displaying Makintach striding through the courthouse in high heels, while a narrator recounted gritty details of Maradona's death. Prosecutor Patricio Ferrari accused Makintach of behaving like an actor, not a judge.

Maradona passed away on November 25, 2020, at the age of 60 due to heart failure and pulmonary edema. He was recuperating in a rented apartment in a wealthy neighborhood north of Buenos Aires after undergoing a brain surgery. Prosecutors are alleging negligence on the part of Maradona's doctors and caregivers, which they claim could have directly resulted in his death. If found guilty, the seven accused could face prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years. All defendants have denied any responsibility for Maradona's death.

The trial, which commenced on March 20, will now be restarted with a new panel of judges. Over 40 witnesses have already testified in the case during the previous trial.

Diego Maradona is revered in his homeland of Argentina, and his untimely death during the COVID-19 pandemic led to widespread mourning in South America and among football fans worldwide. A mausoleum in his honor is being planned for a 1,000-square-meter plot in Puerto Madero, a tourist district of Buenos Aires, expecting up to one million annual visitors.

Allegations surfaced regarding various breaches by Judge Makintach, including unauthorized recordings inside the courtroom, compromising her impartiality, and causing prejudice to the trial. Concerns about influence peddling and bribery further raised questions about her ethical conduct. These scandals led to public outrage, recusal requests, and the ultimate removal of Makintach from the case to preserve judicial integrity and due process.
