Maple Leafs Update: Auston Matthews pairs with a fresh linemate as training camp commences on the ice

Toronto Maple Leafs Adjust to Mitch Marner's Absence

The Toronto Maple Leafs began their on-ice sessions with a focus on adapting to the absence of Mitch Marner, who is currently sidelined with a lower-body injury.

In the absence of Marner, Bobby McMann was assigned as the left-winger for John Tavares and William Nylander. Nylander noted Marner's absence, and it seems to have been an adjustment for him to be in a locker room without his teammate.

Coach Craig Berube expressed that he wanted an intense first day, and the team delivered. The Maple Leafs started their sessions with one-on-one and two-on-two puck battles.

Meanwhile, Auston Matthews, the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs since August 2024, has taken on a leadership role in the locker room. With Marner out or having left the team, Matthews has stepped up as a central figure, while new players try to fill the gap in the offensive line.

Matias Maccelli, a new addition to the team, got his first action with the Maple Leafs, playing on the wing with Matthews and Matthew Knies. Maccelli expressed enthusiasm about playing with the star players, and he mentioned that he was looking forward to playing with Nylander as well.

Noah Chadwick, a Marlies prospect, had a notable battle with Matthews during the on-ice sessions. Chadwick described Matthews as one of the best players in the game.

David Kämpf centred Michael Pezzetta and Calle Järnkrok, while Scott Laughton centred Steven Lorentz and Nicholas Robertson. Easton Cowan and Miroslav Holinka rotated on the right side with Dakota Joshua and Nicolas Roy.

The lines may change when Max Domi returns from his lower-body injury, but for now, the Maple Leafs are focused on moving forward and adapting to the challenges presented by Marner's absence.

In a surprising turn of events, William Nylander and Alex Nylander had a battle during the on-ice sessions. The two siblings showed their competitive spirit, adding an extra layer of excitement to the training sessions.

As the Maple Leafs continue to navigate through the pre-season, they will undoubtedly face more challenges. But with their resilience and determination, they are ready to take on whatever comes their way.
