Maple Leafs commence their post-Marner phase, progressing forward
The Toronto Maple Leafs, who topped the Atlantic Division last season with an impressive 103 points, find themselves at the start of a new chapter following a tumultuous offseason.
The loss of Mitch Marner, who put up a team-high 102 points, to the Vegas Golden Knights after his contract with Toronto expired, has left a significant void in the team's lineup. Marner's departure comes as the Leafs try to sort through the bodies they have, with General Manager Brad Treliving focusing on the team's current roster rather than dwelling on what was.
Despite the loss of Marner, the Leafs have some promising young talent to build around. John Tavares had a bounce-back season with 38 goals and 74 points before re-signing on a team-friendly deal. Treliving has mentioned the need to be comfortable and familiar with history and background when considering adding any of the five players who were acquitted in the Hockey Canada sexual assault trial, who will have the opportunity to sign with NHL teams on Oct. 15.
One of the players, Dillon Dube, was drafted by Treliving when he was General Manager of the Calgary Flames. The Leafs will need to weigh the potential benefits of adding these players against the potential negative consequences of doing so.
The Leafs' playoff run last season saw them best the Ottawa Senators in six games in the first round, but they ultimately fell short in the second round to the eventual Stanley Cup champions, the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Leafs' offseason was not without its injuries, as Max Domi is likely not a full participant due to a lower-body injury, although the issue is believed to be day-to-day.
As the Leafs prepare for the upcoming season, they will be looking to build on the success of last season and find a way to fill the void left by the departure of Mitch Marner. With a strong core of young talent and a newfound focus on team chemistry, the Leafs will be looking to make a deep playoff run and bring the Stanley Cup back to Toronto for the first time since 1967.
