"Manitu's Canoe" - Wistful Comedy and Abundant Emotion Nostalgia
In the much-anticipated sequel to the cult Western parody "Der Schuh des Manitu," our beloved characters return for a fresh and exciting adventure.
The plot follows Apache chief Abahachi (Michael Bully Herbig) and his white blood brother Ranger (Christian Tramitz), who are once again fighting for peace and justice. However, they find themselves trapped by a new gang seeking the legendary "Canoe of Manitou."
Luckily, they are rescued at the last moment by their loyal companion Dimitri (Rick Kavanian) and his new assistant Mary (Jasmin Schwiers). This rescue reveals a larger scheme, leading the heroes on a new adventure filled with comedic slapstick, misunderstandings, and surprising answers to life's important questions.
Compared to its predecessor, "Das Kanu des Manitu" continues with the beloved characters but introduces new threats and sidekicks, including Abahachi’s twin and Mary. The sequel maintains the humor and slapstick style but is noted for having a stronger emotional message.
One notable addition is the inclusion of real Native Americans, providing authenticity that was lacking in the original film. This decision adds a layer of depth and realism to the story.
Winnetouch (also played by Michael Bully Herbig), the owner of a dance and fencing school in the sequel, returns with his stereotypical effeminate portrayal. This character has received support from a large part of the gay community. In an unexpected twist, Winnetouch also displays superpowers in the sequel.
The film contains numerous jokes, dialogues, and gags that have the potential to become iconic quotes. It also features dance numbers, songs, and parodies of various films and television shows, including 1960s Westerns, "Indiana Jones," and the works of Louis de Funès.
Jessica Schwarz plays the boss of the chaotic gang hired by du Mont to find the canoe. Abahachi and Ranger are being chased by the sheriff (Friedrich Mücke) and his lovestruck assistant (Kavanian).
For his final scene, everyone on set gathered, and music played, causing emotional moments for those present. The film is tinged with nostalgia, as it is du Mont's last, with du Mont planning to retire from filmmaking after this.
There is uncertainty about whether there will be a sequel without du Mont, with Kavanian suggesting to ask again in three years. Despite this, "Das Kanu des Manitu" is both a continuation and an expansion of the original’s humor and spirit, bringing new elements and emotional depth to the story.
