"Manitu's Canoe" - Nostalgic Journey with Jokes and Tides of Emotion
In the year 2025, the sequel to the cult German western parody "Der Schuh des Manitu" is set to hit the screens. Titled "Das Kanu des Manitu", this film brings back the beloved characters of Abahachi, Ranger, and Dimitri, but with a fresh twist.
The plot revolves around a canoe said to grant eternal life, which becomes the object of a new gang's greed. Abahachi and Ranger, once again, fight for peace and justice, but this time, they face a more formidable challenge. The villain this time is the oil prince Sky du Mont, who lures them into a trap. However, they are rescued at the last moment by Dimitri, a Greek tavern owner played by Rick Kavanian, and his new colleague Mary.
Compared to its predecessor, "Der Schuh des Manitu" (2001), "Das Kanu des Manitu" delves deeper, offering a stronger emotional and social message alongside its slapstick comedy. Winnetouch, a character from the first film, returns as the owner of a dance and fencing school, skillfully convincing the sheriff and his deputy to help him find his brother who is in distress.
The film also features authentic Native American representation, a departure from using Spanish extras in the original. The Jicarilla Apache of the Red Side Plains People saw the shoot as an opportunity to promote cultural understanding. A very emotional scene in Santa Fe was shot with men and women from several tribes, including American actor Alan Tafoya.
Michael Bully Herbig reprises his role as Abahachi, while Christian Tramitz returns as Ranger. Jessica Schwarz plays The Boss, and for his final scene, everyone on set gathered, and music played. There is speculation about a potential sequel without du Mont, with Kavanian suggesting asking again in three years.
The film is tinged with nostalgia, as it is du Mont's last, with du Mont not planning to make any more films. The sequel to the successful German film is a Western parody and a continuation of the old film, with not every joke aging well due to the passage of time. Nonetheless, it promises non-stop laughs, including yodeling communication between Ranger and Abahachi.
In essence, "Das Kanu des Manitu" builds upon the original's humor and characters but adds new narrative layers and tries to address contemporary sensibilities while retaining its comedic spirit.
| Aspect | Der Schuh des Manitu (2001) | Das Kanu des Manitu (2025) | |----------------------|----------------------------|---------------------------| | Plot focus | Abahachi and Ranger’s initial adventures in a western parody | Battle against a new gang for the legendary "Canoe of Manitou," leading to a bigger adventure | | Main characters | Abahachi, Ranger, Dimitri | Abahachi, Ranger, Dimitri, new colleague Mary, Abahachi’s twin brother | | Tone | Pure slapstick western parody | Slapstick comedy plus a stronger emotional message and social awareness | | Representation | Used Spanish extras as natives | Featured real Native actors for authenticity | | Legacy | Cult classic, mainly comedy | Continuation with humor and new thematic depth |
This comparison shows that the sequel maintains the original’s humor and characters but adds new narrative layers and tries to address contemporary sensibilities while retaining its comedic spirit.
