Manipuri Film Boong Makes History as First BAFTA Winner from the Region

Lakshmipriya Devi's debut feature, Boong, made history as the first Manipuri film to win a BAFTA. The movie took home the BAFTA Children's & Family Film Award in February 2026. Since then, no further awards or public reactions from critics or festivals have been recorded.

Boong follows a schoolboy searching for his missing father along India's border with Myanmar. The story unfolds against a backdrop of ethnic conflict, forcing the young protagonist to confront harsh realities. His journey becomes one of growth, as he uncovers difficult truths about his father and the world around him.

The film tackles heavy themes through a child's perspective. It examines ethno-racial tensions, separatist struggles, and the challenges faced by single parents. Beyond its narrative, Boong serves as a metaphor for the region's long-standing neglect and instability.

Devi's win marked a milestone for Manipuri cinema, bringing rare international recognition to the state's film industry. However, no additional nominations or critical responses have emerged since the BAFTA ceremony.

The BAFTA victory remains the only major accolade for Boong as of now. The film's portrayal of conflict and resilience continues to stand as its defining achievement. No updates on its reception or further honours have been documented since early 2026.
