Confronted by Manuel, Toño reluctantly admitted his deceit: "I swiped from him, but honestly, it wasn't my plan. When I arrived in Luján, I was knee-deep in debts. I intended to use his money, but not squander it. My scheme was to make a fortune through gambling!" The money was intended for machinery, but Toño needed to pay off his debtors. Despite initial wins, his luck soured, and he eventually lost money to other players. To repay them, he sold the car Manuel had loaned him. Now, his debts had escalated: "I owe more than I could earn in two lifetimes working".

Instead of ousting Toño, Manuel made a compassionate decision – yet again – to extend a helping hand: "Lying to me, stealing from me, and orchestrating that ruse with the Civil Guard hasn't got you far! If only you'd been honest with me, we could've sorted out that debt together. But you chose deception. So, I'm helping you dig out of this hole, but only if you make amends with your mother!"
