Green Party Advocates for Nationwide Insurance Policy Against Extreme Weather Damage

Party advocating for compulsory insurance coverage against property damage from natural disasters - Mandate Universal Mandatory Insurance, argue The Greens

Hey there! Let's talk about the latest wave from the Greens. They're demanding more ACTION on a potential solution for building damage caused by extreme weather events. Cornelia Lüddemann, chair of the Greens' faction in Saxony-Anhalt, boldly states, "This isn't just another round of debates after a disaster; we need a solidarity insurance covering the entire country, not just risk areas."

Saxony-Anhalt might set the pace as a single federal state could introduce this insurance. However, the Greens aim for nationwide legislation. Guess who's pushing to spark things off? You got it: Saxony-Anhalt! They're gearing up to launch a Federal Council initiative on this very issue. Lüddemann isn't pulling any punches, saying, "Enough of the delay tactics."

There's a mix of views within the coalition

It turns out even Saxony-Anhalt's Environment Minister, Armin Willingmann (SPD) is on board with the idea of mandatory insurance. He believes that relying on state aid after natural disasters needs to transition to a system where private precautions can regulate damages.

Together with ministers from federal states and the Federal Ministry of the Environment, Willingmann plans to launch a bill that'll broaden and improve residential building insurances, inclusively covering natural hazard protection. They'll also verify whether building owners can refuse the natural hazard insurance and would then become ineligible for state aid in the event of damage.

Contrastingly, the FDP state parliament faction disagrees with the insurance obligation for owners. Instead, they argue insurers should ensure they offer coverage for natural hazards.

  1. Cornelia Lüddemann, the chair of the Alliance 90/The Greens' faction in Saxony-Anhalt, is advocating for a Federal Council initiative that aims to implement a mandatory insurance policy to cover nationwide damage from extreme weather events, particularly floods, due to the increasing threat of natural hazard damage.
  2. The Greens' proposal for a mandatory insurance policy against extreme weather damage includes a broadening and improvement of residential building insurances, ensuring coverage for natural hazard protection and verifying the eligibility of state aid in the event of damage for building owners who refuse the natural hazard insurance.
  3. While both Saxony-Anhalt's Environment Minister, Armin Willingmann (SPD), and the Greens support the implementation of a mandatory insurance policy for natural hazard damage, there is opposition from the FDP state parliament faction, which argues that insurers should ensure they offer coverage for natural hazards rather than forcing owners to obtain it.
