Brandenburg BSW Faces Leadership Strife as Benda Named State Chairwoman
Management Shuffle at BSW
In a surprising move, Brandenburg's BSW, the state's green-left political party, has found itself in the midst of a leadership crisis, with two disgruntled candidates, Vinzenz Lorenz and Andreas Eichner, openly challenging the party's decision to nominate Friederike Benda as their state chairwoman.
Despite missing the 4.98% threshold necessary to enter the Bundestag, Benda served as the lead candidate in Brandenburg, where the BSW scored an impressive 10.7% – the party's best result yet. However, her nomination for the state chair position has been marred by the sudden emergence of Lorenz and Eichner, who argue for a dual leadership for the BSW in Brandenburg.
Benda's nomination, initially announced without mentioning these two candidates, left some members and supporters feeling unsettled. The duo has since reached out to members and supporters of the party, their plea resulting in a letter published in the "Tagesspiegel" under the headline "Tensions in the Brandenburg BSW."
Supporters interviewed by the paper expressed their dissatisfaction with the current state of the party, with some even turning away from the BSW. State parliamentarians, too, have expressed their unease over the situation. The frustration stems from the fact that mistakes have been made and some feel they should not be repeated.
Lorenz and Eichner, both former members of the Left party, were elected to the state board in Brandenburg in April 2022 and applied for the position of deputy state chairman, respectively, a year later. Despite their setbacks, they now propose a dual leadership structure for the BSW.
The Berlin BSW, on the other hand, has been operating with a dual leadership since its inception – Alexander King and Josephine Thyre mines. The party currently boasts 250 members in the capital, with an estimated 100 more set to join by the time district associations are formed in July.
The tensions within the Brandenburg BSW come amidst a turbulent political climate in the state, where budget disputes and political jostling are common occurrences. The future direction of the BSW will depend largely on how these internal disputes are addressed and resolved.
