Man with hammer's threats compel Councillor to reevaluate career in court setting
In a shocking incident that occurred on Castle Street, Ashbourne on May 4th, 2024, Cllr Alan Tobin, a Fine Gael councillor for Meath County Council, was threatened by a man named Ciaran Starrs (50). During the incident, Ciaran Starrs pulled up beside Cllr Tobin in a vehicle, produced a hammer, and made threats. The court was informed that Ciaran Starrs was charged under the Non-Fatal Offences against the Person Act for this disturbing behavior. Defense barrister James O'Brien confirmed that Ciaran Starrs admitted his behavior was unacceptable during Garda interviews. The court was also made aware that Ciaran Starrs has seven previous convictions, the most recent being in 2008. Judge Eirinn McKiernan acknowledged the seriousness of the allegation against Ciaran Starrs and its impact on Mr Tobin. She ordered Ciaran Starrs to make a €500 donation to Meath Women's Refuge. Judge McKiernan implied that, if the donation was paid, she would consider applying the Probation of Offenders Act to the case, potentially avoiding a conviction for Ciaran Starrs. The case was adjourned to allow Ciaran Starrs to pay the donation. Cllr Tobin expressed his concerns about continuing as a public representative due to the potential for similar incidents. He also shared his worries about bringing such incidents onto the heads of his young family. Cllr Tobin's wife heard about the altercation, and he expressed concern about the potential impact on his family. Cllr Tobin accepted an apology offered by Ciaran Starrs but emphasized a zero-tolerance approach to such incidents. A crime-prevention officer visited Cllr Tobin's house to ensure the security of his home. Cllr Tobin stated that the incident made him think twice about continuing as a public representative. He also expressed that he now feels nervous whenever a vehicle pulls up beside him. It's worth noting that Ciaran Starrs is currently not working. The incident occurred in a peaceful town, causing shock and concern among the local community.
