In an exciting turn of events, Manchester United has secured their place in the upcoming league phase of the restructured Champions League, following their 3-1 win against their compatriots in the second leg of the final qualifying round. This aggregate victory marks United's entry into the inaugural 18-team league phase of the competition.

The qualifying round has determined the teams that will participate in the competition proper, with Atletico Madrid edging Hacken 3-2 over two legs being one such example. Two more teams will join this year's competition proper under the revised format.

The revised format aligns itself more closely with the men's version, replacing the old group stage. A total of 36 teams will take part in the league phase of the Champions League 2025/26, with 29 qualifying directly and 7 spots filled through qualification rounds depending on team strength.

The competition proper, also known as the inaugural league phase of the restructured tournament, will consist of an 18-team league phase. The first round of games in the new-look league stage is set to begin on October 7.

Last year's quarter-finalists, Real Madrid, have also advanced to the league phase by defeating Eintracht Frankfurt 5-1 on aggregate. It's worth noting that Eintracht Frankfurt is a four-time winner in the competition.

In a statement, United's coach, Marc Skinner, expressed his excitement, saying, 'We are history makers.' He further motivated his players, stating, 'We've got to go in there and not just make up the numbers, we have to go and really be excited by the opportunity to play against Europe's best teams.'

The draw for the main phase of the competition will take place later on Friday, adding another layer of anticipation to the upcoming season. The Champions League 2025/26 is shaping up to be an exciting tournament, with teams battling it out for the coveted title.
