Man Sentenced for Deliberately Killing Kangaroos in Disturbing Incident
An Australian man, Leo Boland, has been sentenced for deliberately killing two kangaroos in a disturbing incident. The 21-year-old, who had been drinking with friends, used his mother's Holden ute to target the animals on a dirt road at Running Stream in July 2024. Boland's actions have been described as 'disturbing' by Manly Local Court magistrate Daniel Reiss, who rejected Boland's pleas to escape conviction.
Boland pleaded guilty to recklessly beating and injuring the animals, as well as lying to police about driving the car. The court heard that Boland deliberately swerved the vehicle at high speed to kill the kangaroos, even as they tried to escape. His passenger filmed the incident. Boland's lawyer argued that the incident was a 'moment of complete foolishness' and that Boland should not be convicted due to the embarrassment he felt. However, Magistrate Reiss was not convinced and ordered Boland to serve 200 hours of community service and be of good behaviour for 18 months. Boland was also fined a total of AU$1500 (NZ$1703).
Boland's actions have resulted in a significant punishment, reflecting the seriousness of his crime. His deliberate targeting of the animals and the distress caused to the kangaroo community have been taken into account. Boland must now serve his community service and maintain good behaviour to avoid further penalties.
