Alexander Scheer: Embracing Challenges, Empowering Characters

"Man demonstrates his inherent monstrosity"

Facebook Twitter Whatsapp E-Mail Print Copy Link Alexander Scheer, a two-time nominee for the prestigious German Film Award, is captivating audiences with his roles in the films "In Love, Yours, Hilde" and "Cologne 75". These movies star strong female leads, showcasing Scheer's versatility as an actor.

Nerve-wracking or thrilling? Being double-nominated for the German Film Award...

Alexander Scheer: It's a bit of a rollercoaster, to be honest. (laughs)

Better two good supporting roles or one mediocre lead?

Cinema Art in Turbulent Times Good actors relish all roles, whether they last six days or 60. Great roles are hard to come by, and those in outstanding movies are even rarer. I approach every role with a fresh mind, always eager to explore the unknown.

Both of your nominated films paint strong female characters. How do you choose these roles?

...and they're both crafted by men. In "Cologne 75", I portray the vibrant, rebellious 18-year-old Vera Brandes, and in "In Love, Yours, Hilde", I embody Harald Pölchau, a prison chaplain during the Nazi era. Women's stories are significant and deserve to be told, and it's vital that we, as actors, are part of that representation.

Your chances for the award?

I'm humbled and honored to be nominated alongside talented colleagues, like Godehard Giese, but I refuse to let my optimism cloud my realistic understanding. Giese's work is exemplary, and I believe it's his turn to take the award this year.

"In Love, Yours, Hilde" sparked a personal connection...

This film is a testament to resistance and courage. I play Harald Pölchau, a chaplain who was present during over 1000 executions during the Nazi era. Interestingly, my great-uncle once had contact with Pölchau while serving in prison. It's crucial to explore this period more openly, to confront the darkness in our past and recognize that human atrocities can still lurk among us.

Films regarding resistance matter...

Young voices have always declared we want life, and we still raise our voices today. Film is an essential platform for addressing controversial issues, especially when it comes to the Nazis, who remain the ultimate German taboo. We must confront our past, discuss it openly, and recognize that these horrors don't just lie in the hearts of Germans. Humanity itself can be a monster, and we must remain mindful, awake, and willing to challenge the status quo.

"Cologne 75" introduces you to the legendary jazz producer Manfred Eicher...

I've always been fascinated by the synergy of film and music, so playing a music producer was captivating. Eicher is an icon in the international jazz scene, and preparing for the role involved spending countless hours immersing myself in his work. Sometimes, it's not the text that conveys the essence of a character, but the subtle glances or preserved silences.

Real-life characters make acting easier?

Taking on real-life figures provides a foundation to build upon, relieving some of the creative burden. That said, I don't shy away from exploring fresh, unknown territories, even if it means stepping out of my comfort zone. Embracing challenges is what keeps an artist alive.

Collaborating with director Andreas Dresen again in "In Love, Yours, Hilde"?

Continuity is essential, and I admire Dresen's vision as a filmmaker. If he calls asking me to embody a priest, there's no question; I say yes without hesitation.

Performing on stage with Andreas Dresen and Gundermann songs

After our collaboration on the Gundermann film, we decided to bring some of his songs to life in a series of live performances. Six years later, the tour continues, playing to sold-out audiences across Germany.

Taking on the iconic role of David Bowie in "Heroes" at the Berliner Ensemble

I've always been drawn to challenging roles, and portraying Bowie was an opportunity I couldn't resist. Emulating a legend is intimidating, but it's these types of roles that push me to reach new heights as an actor.

Fighting stage fright

Whether it's before a performance or accepting a double nomination, stage fright always lingers. Just days before the premiere of "Heroes," I received my nominations, giving me a much-needed boost of confidence and ensuring a memorable night.

What role does art play in difficult times?

Art serves as a beacon of unity in a society where individualism reigns. It is through films, music, and theater that we transport and discuss the issues of our time. Performing in these art forms offers me the opportunity to affect change and create dialogue, even if it's limited. Arts and culture are crucial to maintaining open discussions and effecting societal change, even in the face of challenges posed by those who seek to diminish them.

Berlin's dwindling support for arts and culture

Unfortunately, Berlin's current administration has chosen to withhold resources from the arts community, focusing instead on construction projects with limited public appeal. This shortsighted approach neglects the vital role that culture plays in fostering a sense of community and encouraging meaningful conversation. Art may not be able to solve the challenges we face directly, but it offers a safe space for exploration and discourse.
