Man City's leadership aims to retain their team captain
Manchester City Braces for Ilkay Gündogan's Departure
Manchester City's midfield maestro, Ilkay Gündogan, is set to leave the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season, as the club has decided against renewing his contract, according to reports.
Despite Gündogan's impressive performances this season, scoring 9 goals and providing 7 assists in 37 matches across all competitions, the club's management has opted for a squad rejuvenation policy under manager Pep Guardiola. Gündogan, aged 34, has agreed personal terms with Turkish giants Galatasaray and is expected to make the move, with Manchester City prioritising younger players and new signings.
The decision to let Gündogan go is part of Manchester City's strategy to reduce the average age of the squad and promote emerging talents such as Nico O’Reilly and Rico Lewis in midfield. Although Gündogan's experience and leadership will be missed, the club views his departure as necessary for building a dynamic, long-term team.
Rumours of a preliminary contract with Spanish La Liga side Barcelona have circulated, but there is no concrete evidence to support these claims. Several top European clubs have expressed interest in Gündogan's services, but as of now, his future lies with Galatasaray.
In a recent upturn in form, Gündogan scored two braces in the last two Premier League matches against Leeds and Everton, showcasing his continued ability to deliver crucial goals. However, with Manchester City's focus on the future, these performances have not been enough to persuade the club to change its decision.
As Gündogan prepares to leave, Manchester City's management and coaching staff are unsure if they have a suitable replacement for the experienced midfielder. The club is actively seeking younger midfielders and fresh talent to fill the void, ensuring the continuity of their squad building strategy.

With Ilkay Gündogan's departure imminent, Manchester City is now on the hunt for an able replacement in the midfield. Despite his impressive performance in European-leagues and the Premier League, Gündogan's contract will not be renewed, with Galatasaray expected to be his new club.
