Man City experiences an emotional comeback as De Bruyne, a 'Genius' in midfield, takes charge at home ground
Napoli has strengthened its squad for the 2025/26 season, making some strategic signings that have bolstered the team around Kevin De Bruyne. The Belgian midfield maestro joined Napoli on a free transfer in the summer of 2025, and the team also brought in Noa Lang from the Netherlands, Miguel Gutiérrez, Giant Serbian goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic (on loan), Lorenzo Lucca (on loan with a mandatory buyout), and Luca Marianucci for a total expenditure of approximately €107 million.
The new additions have proven to be a boon for Napoli, with De Bruyne scoring the opening goal from the penalty spot in their 3-1 win over Fiorentina. Rasmus Hojlund, another new signing, also got off to a scoring start in place of the injured Romelu Lukaku. Noa Lang, too, has joined the Napoli squad, adding more firepower to the team.
Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, the Serbian goalkeeper, and Noa Lang are just two examples of the judicious signings that have further fortified Napoli's squad. Sam Beukema, another new recruit, stepped in admirably in Rrahmani's absence on Saturday and scored a goal on his debut.
With the arrival of De Bruyne, Antonio Conte has created a new role for him in a creative midfield position. Conte views the upcoming clash at Manchester City as a learning opportunity and a potential chance for his team to surpass their masters. Scott McTominay, a former Manchester United player, has been pushed out to the left in Napoli's formation, but is still free to attack.
Conte views Wednesday's clash as a "moment of truth" for both him and his team. Manchester City thumped their rivals in the Manchester derby, showcasing their abilities despite a rocky recent run. De Bruyne's return to the Etihad stadium is likely to be an emotional one, given his history with the club, having won six Premier League titles and the Champions League there over a decade ago.
However, Napoli's title challenge has not been without its setbacks. Key forwards Victor Osimhen and Giacomo Raspadori have departed, leaving a void up front. Amir Rrahmani, the starting centre-back for Napoli, is out injured, and De Bruyne's passing range was a continuous threat in Napoli's win over Fiorentina, highlighting the need for a solid defence.
Antonio Conte, previously a Premier League winner with Chelsea, has been criticized for lack of flexibility and perceived inability to handle European competition. However, Conte has adapted his style since taking over at Napoli and is aware of the challenges facing his team in the league phase. Aurelio De Laurentiis, the combative and financially careful owner of Napoli, has invested in the team after receiving hefty fees for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Victor Osimhen.
As Napoli prepares to face Manchester City, the question remains: can they overcome their past defeats and challenge for the title? With De Bruyne leading the charge, and a bolstered squad, they certainly have a fighting chance.
