Mamdani holds a strong lead in the mayoral race, securing 39% of the votes in a recent poll
In the ongoing race for New York City Mayor, the Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani continues to lead, according to several recent polls.
A new survey by Public Policy Polling, shared exclusively with City & State ahead of its release, found that Mamdani has less of a lead compared to recent days, with 39% of the votes. The poll was conducted to determine voter preferences if the general election were today.
Interestingly, this poll contrasts with findings from The New York Times/Siena College poll, which was carried out between Sept. 2 and 6. This poll found that 46% of respondents would vote for Mamdani, a handful of percentage points off from the respective 39% measured in the Public Policy Polling survey.
Another recent poll from PIX11, Emerson College and The Hill found 43% support for Mamdani, further underscoring his position as the front-runner.
The polling data for the Public Policy Polling survey report on the New York City mayoral race in September 2021 was created by Public Policy Polling for the national advocacy organization Decriminalize Sex Work. The poll was conducted by text and landline, and it did not specify the number of undecided voters.
The poll results showed that a significant majority of the individuals surveyed, roughly 69%, were registered with the Democratic Party. The remaining 13% were Republicans, while 13% were independents or part of more niche political parties. Just 1% were with the Conservative Party, and 4% were with the Working Families Party.
Other recent polls exploring a two-way Cuomo and Mamdani match up have found a much narrower race, albeit one Mamdani still appears to lead. Quinnipiac University's poll found that 45% of likely voters support Mamdani, with former Gov. Andrew Cuomo trailing behind at 37%.
Public Policy Polling accurately predicted Mamdani's lead in the Democratic mayoral primary in June. As the race heats up, it will be interesting to see how the numbers continue to shift.
