Mamdani equates the concept of shared humanity between Charlie Kirk and the killing of Palestinians.
Zohran Mamdani Condemns Charlie Kirk's Killing at Mazal Awards
Zohran Mamdani, the democratic socialist candidate who won the June Democratic mayoral primary in New York City, addressed the recent killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk at the Jews for Racial and Economic Justice's 2025 Mazal Awards.
In his speech, Mamdani began by condemning the tragic event that took place in Utah. He emphasised the human impact of Kirk's killing, expressing his sympathy for Kirk's wife and children, as well as the families affected by a subsequent mass shooting that occurred in Colorado later on the same day.
Mamdani made a point to address Kirk's killing in his speech, despite having made Islamophobic comments about him months earlier. However, his speech did not repeat his earlier comments or delve into the details of the shooting. Instead, he extended his shared notion of humanity to Palestinians in Gaza, rejecting the drawing of lines in the sand when it comes to Palestinian lives.
Mamdani was honoured at the event alongside New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, and the award was presented by comedian Ilana Glazer. Despite his victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the primary, Mamdani's speech did not mention any other political figures or events besides Kirk's killing, his speech in Utah, and his comments about Palestine.
Mamdani's outspoken support for Palestine was a key factor in his 13-point victory over Cuomo, positioning him as the main anti-Trump candidate in the race. The establishment Democrat Andrew Cuomo sought Donald Trump's support, while the incumbent mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, did not run in the primary and planned to run on independent lines instead.
As the democratic socialist candidate, Mamdani's speech was a testament to his commitment to addressing social and racial justice issues, as well as his ability to unite people in mourning, regardless of their political beliefs.
