Tensions Rise as Mayoral Candidates Face Off against Trump's Influence
Mamdani embarks on a city-wide tour, labeling himself Trump's greatest adversary.
As the 2025 New York City mayoral election approaches, tensions are mounting between the candidates and former President Donald Trump.
Democratic Candidate: Zohran Mamdani
Mamdani, a progressive state assemblyman, is the Democratic nominee for the upcoming election. He gained significant attention for his upset victory over former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the primary. Mamdani's platform focuses on progressive policies, but specific details about his stance on Trump's agenda are not widely highlighted.
Last week, Mamdani positioned himself as the strongest candidate to oppose Trump's agenda, accusing both Cuomo and Trump of being associated with corruption. He also claimed that Trump has three candidates in the race, one he's directly been in touch with, another he bailed out of legal trouble, and the final one is a member of the same Republican Party.
Trump has threatened a federal takeover of the city and has also threatened to deport Mamdani, a Ugandan native, and to arrest him if he intervenes with ICE agents' raids. In response, Mamdani tied independent candidate Mayor Eric Adams, Andrew Cuomo, and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa as Trump's allies.
Republican Candidate: Curtis Sliwa
Sliwa, the Republican nominee, has previously run for the mayoral office. He is a conservative activist and talk show host. While Sliwa has not been endorsed by Trump, he often discusses issues like crime and immigration, which are similar to some of Trump's talking points. However, Sliwa explicitly states that "the Trump candidate is Eric Adams," hinting at Adams' potential alignment with Trump's agenda.
Independent Candidates: Eric Adams and Andrew Cuomo
Adams, the incumbent mayor, is running as an independent after withdrawing from the Democratic primary. While Adams is not a traditional candidate tied to Trump's agenda, his campaign has been compared to Trump's in some respects by Curtis Sliwa.
Cuomo, also running as an independent after losing the Democratic primary, has distanced himself from Trump, stating that he has fought with Trump more than anyone else. However, Mamdani has accused Cuomo of speaking with Trump on the phone about the election, an allegation that Cuomo denies. Cuomo also claims that he prevented Trump from sending the National Guard into New York.
The Tour and the Partisan Battlefield
Mamdani is currently touring all five city boroughs, aiming to highlight the harm President Trump has caused and will continue to cause to New Yorkers. He will speak in Manhattan on Monday, in Brooklyn on Tuesday, Staten Island on Wednesday, the Bronx on Thursday, and Queens on Friday.
Adams' office criticizes Mamdani for turning the mayor's office into a partisan battlefield. Cuomo, in a controversial statement, threatened that Trump would flatten Mamdani like a pancake. Despite the escalating tensions, the election is expected to be a closely contested race.
