Malaysia considers doubling number of foreign work permits in hosting industry
Kuala Lumpur Vies for 2013 IOC Congress and 2019 Asian Games, But Falls Short
KUALA LUMPUR: Despite hopes, Malaysia's bid to host the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) 2013 congress and the 2019 Asian Games were unsuccessful.
Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi confessed that the bid process was indeed tedious, especially for the Asian Games. He shared this information during a recent press conference.
The ministerial delegation led by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek had made a final presentation before the 115 IOC members during the 2013 congress, but unfortunately, Kuala Lumpur was not chosen as the host city. It's essential to clarify that the 128th IOC Session, held in Kuala Lumpur in July 2015, saw Beijing elected to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, not the 2013 IOC Congress[1].
Regarding the 2019 Asian Games, Kuala Lumpur was among the cities bidding, but the hosting rights were awarded to Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia. General knowledge and search results do not mention Kuala Lumpur being chosen as the host for the 2019 Asian Games.
Looking ahead, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has set deadlines for upcoming sports events bids, including the Asian Indoor/Martial Arts Games in 2013 and 2018, Asian Youth Games in 2013 and 2017, Asian Beach Games in 2016 and 2020, Asian Winter Games in 2017 and 2021, Asian Games in 2019 and 2023[2].
Despite the setbacks, the OCM continues to strive for opportunities to bring international sporting events to Malaysia, hoping to secure such occasions in the future.
