Malayalam film Lokah Chapter 1, starring Kalyani Priyadarshan, is on the brink of shattering records to claim the title of the highest-grossing Malayalam movie, threatening to oust the current champion...
In the vibrant world of Malayalam cinema, two blockbuster films have been making waves – Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra and L2: Empuraan.
Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, directed by Dominic Arun and produced by Dulquer Salmaan, has been a groundbreaking film for several reasons. Starring Kalyani Priyadarshan as the superhero Chandra, it marks the first instance of a female superhero leading an Indian film. This Malayalam production has been competing with Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran's L2: Empuraan in terms of box office collections.
Despite facing a political backlash and undergoing re-censorship with 24 cuts, L2: Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, managed to gross Rs 265 crore and became the highest-grossing Malayalam film. On the other hand, Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra, with no new information about its net earnings in India or overseas collections provided, is on the verge of becoming the highest-grossing Malayalam film of all time.
In its third week, Lokah Chapter 1 breached the Rs 250-crore mark at the worldwide box office, and as of now, it has grossed Rs 260 crore worldwide. If we just talk about its overseas collections, Lokah Chapter 1 has collected Rs 111.45 crore from outside India, a huge achievement for a Malayalam film. In its 21 days, Lokah Chapter 1 has earned Rs 126.95 crore net in India.
As for the future of the Lokah/Wayfarer Cinematic Universe, the next installments will focus on Tovino Thomas's goblin Chathan/Michael and Dulquer Salmaan's sword-wielding ninja Charlie/Odiyan. It has been confirmed that Mammootty will play a key role in these future films as Moothon, but no new information about these films or Mammootty's role has been disclosed yet.
