Malawi Proposes Amendments to Communications Law: MACRA Solicits Public Opinion
The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has announced a review of the Communications Act (Cap 68:01) to ensure that the law remains responsive to new technologies, market changes, and stakeholder needs. As part of the review process, MACRA is inviting comments and recommendations from various contributors to ensure the Act remains relevant and effective.
The deadline for submitting feedback is September 5, 2025. Contributions can be made via email to [email protected], by post to P.O. Box 30214, Lilongwe, or in person at MACRA offices in Lilongwe, Mzuzu, Mangochi, and Blantyre.
The Communications Act review aims to adapt the communications sector regulations to the evolving industry landscape. MACRA emphasises its commitment to stakeholder engagement in the review process, soliciting input from individuals, industry players, consumer groups, government agencies, academia, and civil society organisations.
Stakeholders and the general public have been given 21 days from the date of the notice to submit their comments and recommendations on the review. MACRA has established a Digital Laws Taskforce to lead the review process and gather feedback from various contributors.
The purpose of the call for contributions is to gather diverse perspectives, proposals, and recommendations that will inform the review and drafting of the Communications Act. Submissions should include the name or organisation of the contributor, contact details, interest in the communications sector, and specific recommendations supported by justifications where possible.
MACRA aims to ensure that Malawi's communications legal and regulatory framework remains responsive to rapid technological changes, evolving market developments, and the needs of stakeholders. The full Communications Act, Cap 68:01, can be accessed on the MACRA website.
This review is significant as it could impact various communication sectors, including email services and other telecommunication technologies within Malawi. The process aims for a comprehensive update in line with technological advancement and market dynamics. MACRA encourages all interested parties to take part in shaping the future of Malawi's communications regulatory framework.
