Germans in Hesse Express Doubts About Democracy and Trust in Federal Government

Nationwide Crisis of Democracy Perceived by Majority in Hesse Study - Majority perceives democracy in a critical state, according to Hessen study.

Get ready to dive into the attitudes of Germans, particularly those residing in Hesse, towards democracy and their trust in various institutions. In a recent study by Infratest Dimap, it's clear that people's loyalty lies closer to their home state government than to the federal one.

Starting off, a majority of Hesse residents feel that democracy in Germany is underperforming or failing. Yet, when it comes to Hesse itself, only a third share this view. The study, which questioned 1,502 eligible voters in Hesse from April 3 to 16, shines a light on the citizens' stance.

Benedikt Kuhn, the head of the State Chancellery in Wiesbaden, reminded everyone of the forthcoming state law for promoting democracy. Kuhn's sentiments were shared by Hesse's Minister President Boris Rhein (CDU), who has vowed to strengthen trust in democracy as a central focus of this legislative period.

One key insight from the study is the "differentiation ability of the population." According to Infratest Dimap, the state of Hesse and Hessian politics is seen in a much more positive light compared to the federal political landscape. With Hesse under black-red coalition leadership for a year and a half, the study suggests that citizens judge their regional and state politics based on effectiveness, communication, and tangible results.

As for the federal government, managing director Simon Schlinkert pointed out that trust decreases the farther one strays from figures of political responsibility, such as mayors, and increases closer to them. Yet, it's important to note that the study was conducted in April when the former traffic light government in Berlin was still in power, as the current black-red federal government fares better in polls.

Looking beyond Hesse, Infratest Dimap draws attention to a "pessimistic mood in the Federal Republic" that shapes negative assessments towards democracy. The study revealed that criticism is more prevalent among people with lower incomes, those residing in rural and small-town areas, and especially among middle-aged generations.

So, what or who do people trust in Hesse? The study shows that police and people in the region top the trust ranking, while the federal government and media find themselves at the bottom. Furthermore, respondents regard people primarily based on their origin and skin color as discriminated against, in contrast to age, gender, and religion.

Kuhn believes that Hesse's "citizen-oriented, pragmatic politics" and its closeness and understandable communication help combat political cynicism and disconnection between the state and citizens. Yet, concerns persist: 86 percent of respondents fear deteriorating public order, and 77 percent believe the state is drowning in bureaucracy. To address these worries, Kuhn emphasized that reinforcing citizens' trust in the state and politics remains crucial by providing security and minimizing bureaucracy.

Insights: The recent Infratest Dimap study reveals that Germans exhibit lower trust in the federal government compared to their state governments and other institutions. This trend can be attributed to factors such as political instability, the local performance of state governments, and the public's critical appraisal of federal governance effectiveness. Moreover, broader political attitudes and the recent electoral landscape play a role in citizens' skepticism towards the federal government.

In the Infratest Dimap study, it was found that the German populace, particularly those in Hesse, express doubts about the performance of democracy in the federal government. The study also highlighted a positive view towards Hesse's state government and politics, with citizens evaluating them based on effectiveness, communication, and tangible results. Furthermore, the study indicated a pessimistic mood in the Federal Republic, with criticism being more prevalent among lower-income individuals, those dwelling in rural or small-town areas, and middle-aged generations. Meanwhile, the study showed that policy-and-legislation, including federal and local policies, significantly impact people's trust in various institutions.
