A Peek into Ukrainians' Feelings About the US Critical Minerals Deal

Majority of Ukrainians Expect Positive Outcomes from U.S. Minerals Agreement (47%)

In a poll conducted by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, it's been revealed that as of early May, nearly half of Ukrainians — roughly 47% — hold a somewhat optimistic expectation towards the US critical minerals deal signing.

This survey also indicated that 22% of respondents anticipate potential adverse impacts from this deal, while 19% believe it won't affect Ukraine whatsoever. Remaining undecided were 12% of the participants. The overall balance of positive and negative views hovers at a positive +25%, pointing towards an optimistic outlook.

When we examine the regional expectations, the eastern and western parts of Ukraine show slightly fewer optimistic views. However, it's essential to note that negative opinions in these regions account for less than a quarter of the respondents, ensuring a net positive balance in both cases — albeit with a relatively small sample size.

This telephone survey was carried out on 2nd May, involving adults residing in government-controlled areas of Ukraine. The contents of the poll included a question about the agreement's perceived impact. As of 6th May, the field phase of the survey is set to continue until mid-May 2025, with 561 interviews being conducted so far. Although the survey is ongoing, the sampled size allows for drawing preliminary conclusions, with a margin of error of 5.4% at a 95% confidence level and a design effect of 1.3. As per the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, the final results are expected to remain relatively unchanged.

On 1st May, Ukraine's Economy Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko and US Treasury Secretary Scott Beeson sealed this critical minerals deal. Following the agreement, the Ukrainian government submitted the Kyiv-Washington agreement on the establishment of the Reconstruction Investment Fund to parliament for ratification on the same day. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal hoped for the ratification of the minerals agreement with the US by 8th May.

While public opinion is an essential factor in understanding the implications of this deal, a more detailed analysis would necessitate further exploration and a wide range of data points. Keep an eye out for subsequent polls that may shed more light on this topic.
